Number of Participants: 20-25
Age of Participants: 5 – 12
Time Allotment: 30 minutes
Required Supplies/Equipment:
- round, white coffee filters (the unbleached kind do not work as well),
- non-washable markers in bright colors,
- scissors
- water
- paper towels
Objective: to create a colorful, crazy project and have fun!
Class Breakdown:
- 5 minutes of introduction of activity, demonstration, and expectations
- 20 minutes of activity
- 5 minutes clean-up
Instruction:
- Color the filter with the markers. You want to cover the majority of the filter with color, leaving just a few white spaces. Using lots of different colors makes for the most interesting effects. There is no need to draw any actual objects on the filter, just cover it with a random design and lots of color.
- Now that your filter is completely colored, you are ready for the tie-dye action! Place the filter on some paper towels, or somewhere outside on the ground. Picking up a small amount of water on your fingertips, start to splash the water onto the filter, from several inches away. Splash quickly and evenly all over the filter surface.
- Once you have splashed water on the majority of the filter surface, take another small stack of paper towels and press gently on the filter to soak up any remaining droplets. Remove the paper towels, and peel away the filter. Lay it somewhere dry and flat so it may dry completely.
